Seeds I Started This Week - Cool Flowers & Winter Sowing

The new year is here, and with that, the beginning of a new flower season!

I don't know about you, but I couldn't wait any longer to start some seeds. So let's start a series called "Seeds I Started this Week - For Our 2-Acre Flower Farm in New Jersey Zone 7b".

The other day I spent some time outside with my youngest, prepped all our supplies for winter sowing, and had some fun planting early, cool flowers together. 

In case you didn't already know what cool flowers are, they are cold hardy annual flowers (although we did start some perennials this way as well) that need a period of cold stratification to grow. 

Now as a busy mom of three, with two of them being under 6, I'm somewhat limited on time and how long certain farm projects can take. So winter sowing was the perfect blend of both time-savvy seed starting for me, and having fun with those little hands in the soil for my little one. 

Here are the seeds we started this week (January 8th-10th, 2026):

 - Chabaud (Carnations): Yellow, Orange & Pink
 - Feverfew: Sunnyball & Magic Single
 - Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower): Ochroleuca, Starflower & Snow Maiden
 - Yarrow: The Pearl
 - Bachelor’s Button: Tall Blend (Pink, Purple & Blue)
 - Bells of Ireland
 - Craspedia (Golden Drumstick)
 - Bupleurum
 - Love-in-a-Mist (Nigella): Miss Jekyll Blend (Blue Hues)

So here's the thing I love about winter sowing (and if you don't know what that is, I'll share more on another blog post and videos on our social media), you can let nature do the work FOR you!
