DIY Pumpkin Jar Centerpiece Kit

You carve it. You arrange it. You made it.

This is the fall project we keep getting asked for — a centerpiece you build yourself, with flowers cut from our field that morning.

Each kit comes with a small round pumpkin, one of our little jelly jars, a length of striped ribbon, and a generous bunch of fresh flowers. You carve an opening in the top of the pumpkin, drop the jar down inside, and that's it.

The jar is the trick. Because the water never touches the pumpkin flesh, it won't rot from the inside the way a bare hollowed pumpkin does. Top off the water every couple of days and your arrangement will hold for two to three weeks — and when the flowers fade, you can refill it with whatever's blooming next.

Flowers and pumpkins vary in colors.

What you get depends on what's peaking that week — dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, celosia, gomphrena, and whatever foliage is looking good.

Instructions

Your DIY Pumpkin Centerpiece

You'll need: a small serrated knife or an inexpensive pumpkin saw, a spoon, and a marker.

Trace. Set the jar on top of the pumpkin, slightly off-center toward the back, and trace around its base with a marker.
Cut inside the line. Cut just inside what you traced, angling the blade inward as you go. The opening should be a little narrower than the widest part of the jar — that's what holds it snug.
Scoop. Clean out the seeds and strings. Wipe the cavity dry with a paper towel.
Test-fit. Drop the jar in before you arrange anything. Shave the opening a little wider if you need to. It's much easier to take away than to put back.
Tie the ribbon around the top of the glass, and you're done.

To keep it going: Top off the water every other day and re-cut any stem that goes soft. Keep it out of direct sun and away from the fruit bowl — ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas and will age your flowers fast.

Expect 7-10 days for the fresh flowers, and up to 3 weeks for your pumpkin.
